Dental abscess: why should it be treated quickly?

A dental abscess is a localized infection around a tooth or gum. It may cause pain, swelling, bad taste, fever or difficulty opening the mouth. Treatment depends on the origin and may involve drainage, root canal therapy, periodontal care or extraction in some cases. Antibiotics alone are not always enough because the infectious source must be treated.
